Lentil Soup with Xawaash Spice

Lentil Soup

  • 3 Tbsp (45 mL) Olive oil
  • 1 Medium onion (chopped)
  • 2 Garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL) Paprika
  • ½ tsp (2.5 mL) Turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp (1.25 mL) Ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp (2.5 mL) Cumin (ground)
  • ½ tsp (2.5 mL) Ground black pepper
  • 1 Medium tomato (chopped)
  • 1 Small sweet red bell pepper (chopped)
  • 1 Small carrot (chopped)
  • 1½ cups (270 g) Split red lentils (washed)
  • 8 cups (2 litres) Water
  • 1 tsp Xawaash Spice + 2 tsp salt

Garlic & Cumin Oil

  • 3 Tbsp (45 mL) Olive oil
  • 1 Garlic clove (sliced)
  • ½ tsp (2.5 mL) Cumin (ground)


  1. Using medium heat, saute the chopped onion with 3 tablespoons of olive oil for 3 minutes, then add the garlic.
  2. Add the paprika, turmeric powder, ground cinnamon, ground cumin, ground black pepper, and stir well.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes and stir well. Add the bell pepper and carrot and cook for 5 minutes. Then add the lentils and water.
  4. Add the Xawaash spice and salt and stir well.
  5. When it comes to a boil, cover and cook over low heat for 45 minutes.
  6. Blend until smooth.
  7. Using low heat, fry the sliced garlic in 3 tablespoons of olive oil until golden brown.
  8. Remove the fried garlic, then add the cumin and turn off the heat.
