⏳Prep Time: 10 minutes | 🔥Cook time: 18-22 minutes | 🥘 Total Time: ~30 minutes | 📌Servings: 12-16 cupcakes (standard)

Ingredients

For the Cupcakes:

  • 1 box vanilla or yellow cake mix Ingredients listed on the back of the box (typically eggs, oil, and water)
  • 1 tablespoon (3 tsp) USimplySeason Chinese Five Spice
  • Optional: 1 tsp vanilla extract or orange zest for extra flavor

For the Frosting:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: ¼ tsp USimplySeason Chinese Five Spice stirred into the frosting or sprinkled on top

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to the temperature listed on your cake mix box (usually 350°F). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. Mix It Up: Prepare the cake mix according to package instructions, then stir in the Chinese Five Spice and optional vanilla or orange zest. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  3. Bake: Divide the batter evenly into the cupcake liners. Bake as directed on the box, usually 18–22 minutes. Let them cool completely before frosting.
  4. Make the Frosting: Beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar. Add milk and vanilla until the frosting reaches your desired consistency. Stir in a pinch (¼ tsp) of Chinese Five Spice for an aromatic lift, if desired.
  5. Frost & Finish: Frost the cupcakes and finish with a tiny dusting of Chinese Five Spice or candied ginger for extra flair.

Make It Your Own

  • Chai Vibes: Add a pinch of cardamom or ground ginger to the frosting for an even more complex flavor.
  • Citrus Glaze: Not a frosting fan? Try a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and orange juice for a light, zingy finish.
  • Mini Cupcakes: Make minis for parties—just reduce bake time to 10–12 minutes.
