Ingredients

Dough:

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 package (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp USimplySeason Chinese Five Spice
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 large egg

Filling:

Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Make the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the warm milk, yeast, granulated sugar, Chinese five spice powder, and salt. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until the yeast is foamy.
  2. Add the flour, melted butter, and egg to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Assemble the Cinnamon Rolls

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. Roll out the dough into a 12x16 inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
  3. Spread the filling evenly over the dough.
  4. Roll up the dough jelly-roll style, starting from a long side.
  5. Cut the dough into 12 equal rolls.
  6. Place the rolls in the prepared baking pan, cut-side down.
  7. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rise for 30 minutes.

Bake the Cinnamon Rolls

  1. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  2. Let the cinnamon rolls cool in the pan for 5 minutes before frosting.

Make the Glaze

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  2. Drizzle the glaze over the warm cinnamon rolls.

🔄 Tips and Variations:

  • For a softer dough, use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
  • To make the rolls ahead of time, freeze them before baking. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and bake as directed.
  • For a more flavorful glaze, add a pinch of salt or a dash of almond extract.
  • Get creative with your fillings! Try adding chopped nuts, dried fruit, or chocolate chips.
  • If you want a stronger Chinese Five Spice flavor, add more to the dough or even add some to the glaze
